On Saturday, the Florida Gators basketball team announced that forward Eloy Vargas had been granted his release from the program and would likely seek a transfer to another school.
Vargas was in danger of becoming academically ineligible due to several poor grades during his freshman year.
He also struggled to recover from an injury and saw an extremely limited amount of time in his first season in Gainesville. Now, he will join a growing list of transfers out of the program since the Gators won back-to-back National Championships in 2006 and 2007.
Personally, I do not believe Vargas' transfer will not be a huge loss. He had a minimal impact as a freshman and was fourth or fifth at best in the big man rotation heading into the 2009-10 season.
As I reported in the previous blog post, Vargas will indeed visit Kentucky. Kentucky head coach John Calipari recruited Vargas while he was at Memphis and may give the former Gator a shot there.
Again, I don't see Vargas ever having much of an impact if he does end up at Kentucky, as the Wildcats recently pulled in a talented class of big men.
Best of luck to Vargas in the future, hopefully he can get his academics straightened out and have a successful college basketball career. I'm excited about the spot this will open for the Gators in the 2010 recruiting class.
